After Fred spending every waking moment, when not at work, on the bus, we headed off on our first trip. We have 4 weeks leave from work so this will be our “test run”. Not everything is finished but plenty close enough for us to be comfortable and content. We have bought bits of this and bits of that, tools etc. to finish some projects as well as a precaution – you never know what might be needed.
We are travelling Victoria to Queensland. We started on Monday and our first stop was Bright, Victoria, staying at the NRMA Caravan Park with friends. We will free camp as much as we can, however this was pre-organised. It was not so squeezy getting in and the fact that it was on dark didn’t help. However with Fred’s superb driving skills and me outside with the walkie talkie there were no incidents. We are taking up 3 sites however. We stayed 4 nights enjoying the company of our friends on rides, dinners, BBQ’s around the camp fire and drives to check out the sights. We had a wonderful time, the weather was mostly gorgeous even though brisk. I must say people, if you haven’t been to Bright, as Molly Meldrum would say, “Do yourself a favour”. It is a lovely spot and has plenty to offer in all seasons.
We left Bright today and have travelled over Tawonga Gap to Lake Hume and settled for the night in Old Junee. Yep we are now in New South Wales. I checked earlier to ensure that we did not require a permit to cross the border but there weren’t any checkpoints anyway.
Lake Hume is massive but quite low at the moment. We have tagged this as a place we will come back to for a stay. There is a rail trail ride, The High Country Rail Trail, it goes for 80km from Wodonga through Old Tallangatta out to Shelley hugging Lake Hume. This is definitely on our future “To Do List”.
We continued via Culcairn to Henty. We stopped at the rest stop prior to Henty and learnt the history of the “Henty Man”.
After a relaxing day leisurely cruising along we parked up at Old Junee Recreation Reserve. By all accounts on Wikicamps, including pictures, it is a beautifully mowed spot, big and open and suitable for Big Rigs. Well it does have that potential however it is not how we found it. No biggie though as we parked alongside it, as the grass was too long to be comfortable inside, and will spend the night before exploring Junee tomorrow.
We finished the day by cooking dinner on the BBQ and for dessert whipped up a quick batch of camp scones also cooked in the BBQ. Bloody brilliant!
Stay tuned until our next update……..
I was seriously thinking about you today Gayle.
Your trip sounds great so far & believe it or not. Peter & I were at the same caravan park in Bright.
Arrived last Sunday & left yesterday. 😃😃
Definitely a beautiful spot & the town has a good vibe & friendly.
Keep having fun & enjoy your travels
Hey Cathy, I can’t believe that we were in the same caravan park at the same time. Bummer! Wasn’t the weather beautiful? We are heading to Queensland for Freds’ Dad’s memorial and home again. I am absolutely loving it and don’t want it to end. I can’t wait for this to be our full time gig. Take care. xoxo
Enjoyed reading the first week notes Gayle.
Thanks Toni, we are loving it! Will find it hard to go back to work. 🙂
