After a lovely stay in Birdsville on The Common, we headed out to Big Red for our 3rd Big Red Bash. Each year we have volunteered and this year we are car marshalling again. We are in good company with friends from previous years and meeting new peeps as well.
Before setting up camp, we took DeTrucksta up Big Red to confirm he is ready and capable to head into the desert after the Bash is over. We were very happy that we went up, over and back up again. It was quite fitting to be at the Bash as it was rockin’ and rollin’ on one of the tracks. Happy to report that when we got back up and checked inside, all was still in place.
We went in early to help out so watched State of Origin on DeTrucksta Big Screen with friends.
Our first shifts started on Friday but we did an extra shift on Thursday to help out. This is a hoot of a job, watching people dynamics parking in groups etc.
The weather came in and in no time we were in a mud slurry. This is never a fun part but does prove useful afterwards by settling the dust. It was bloody dusty on Thursday and Friday and I was lucky enough to stand for 7 hours on the main road with the crowds driving on by. It was definitely a night to have a shower lol.
Due to the wet the whole bash site was in lockdown, no vehicle movement but that didn’t stop people slopping about. Gotta love people watching.
The weather cleared in time for all patrons to get in and the concerts got started. We had a great 4 nights listening to live artists.
There is heaps of other stuff to do as well. We missed the Big Blue Day due to working, watched the Drag Race and I got on board the Nutbush Train. We channelled our inner Tina and were promoted to the front row. So much fun!
The weather was coming back in and everyone was asked to leave the site by 2pm Friday. We normally stay until Saturday to avoid the rush. We stayed and helped pack down the site on Friday before heading into Birdsville, where we will camp for a few days sitting out the weather and awaiting the road updates to determine our next destination. Big Red on the edge of the Simpson Desert is definitely a unique place.
What a fantastic time we had with old and new friends.
Stay tuned………
