Well as you can tell from the blog title, I’m a bit stoked as we got our internal fit out in this weekend. It’s looks great and I’m happy to report that the bike box doesn’t look monstrous at all, (was I concerned, maybe a little lol) and the big ass fridge fits in perfectly, definitely in proportion with the build which is a great outcome. Be prepared to be photo spammed – I’m so bloody happy with this!
First things first though. Because we knew we would be lugging a heap of hefty cupboards up into the truck we decided it was time to get step treads for our fancy as steps. Let’s face it, we can’t afford the liability suit if someone falls through and breaks an ankle. We ducked into our favourite sheet metal place and ordered them on Monday and picked them up Wednesday. Champion mob! Great timing as Fred could fit them before he headed back to dayshift on Friday. I’ve got to say they are awesome. I was concerned that I would still need a rail of some sort but after climbing in and out heaps of times, most times carrying a cupboard or the like, I can vouch that they worked a charm! I’m so bloody happy with this, as a safe and comfortable entry to the box was always high on my priority list.
One and a half days and we have all our cupboards in. We have a few bits and pieces to fix/finish but overall it was a rippa effort all round. Fred was on dayshift so he missed all the fun but I got to play TA and I had a ball. Glueing, cutting, measuring, carrying, balancing – bloody awesome! It came together so well and even the fitter was impressed as to how well it all went in. We had to tweak a bit here and there but overall it was pretty seamless. For those interested, the cupboards are a polytec melamine Canterbury Grey Matt and the bench tops are a polytec laminate Calcutta Grey. We had the grey and white theme in De Busta and loved it so I stayed with what I knew and loved.
Earlier I eluded to the bike box possibly standing out literally. Well after all it is 1m x 1m and as the habitat box is only 2.4m across this was taking up more than a third of the width. Well I’m pleased to say that it doesn’t stand out like a sore toe but in fact fits in quite nicely. Now you might be saying what the heck is a 1m x 1m bike box, well it is exactly how’s it’s described, it is a big ass box, floor to ceiling, that will house our bikes. 5 bikes in fact, 1 have 2 and Fred has kindly downsized to 3 lol! Yep I have a road bike and an e-bike commuter/grocery/booze/rail trail bike and Fred has 2 road bikes and a gravel bike. To be honest, if I could find 1 bike that would do all that for me, I’d gladly go there. All of these bikes plus accessories need to fit into this 1m x 1m box. Before you all think we are mad, we did want to build a box onto the back of the truck that would house the bikes but the “rules” state that a fixture, which an enclosed box would be, could not be attached to the back of the box unless we wanted to lose that area inside. Funny about rules, we can attach a bike rack that flaps in the breeze and this is legal but not an actual box fixed in place. Hence our bike box inside.

I’m loving it all, my gorgeous little sink is looking spectacular set in the kitchen bench. The fridge fits a charm in its allocated position and the pantry will look a treat once the microwave/convection oven/airfryer is put in place. Now to see if all our stuff fits. I’ve got to say, I’m bit concerned about the space over the bed, ideally this will house all our clothes plus – guess we just have to wait and see. Maybe I can talk Fred into only have 1 cupboard lol!
